Education and Research in Algeria

Following its independence from France, Algeria paid considerable attention to its education sector, resulting in significant advancements in the distribution of institutions of higher education as well as Algerians’ access to them. Of note is the expansion from the original count of one single university in the early 1960s — located in the capital, Algiers — to currently over one hundred (106) institutions of higher learning, spread through the nation’s 48 wilayas (provinces). Governmental administration for these institutions is housed in the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. And as the name suggests, Algeria has also made considerable investments in the research sector, resulting in a network of over 70 research entities under the Director General of Scientific Research and Technological Development.

Below is further information and data regarding the context for education and research in Algeria, as well as a listing of its institutions.
